The Helen Maclellan Tipton Charitable Trust

Helen M. Tipton

The Helen M. Tipton Charitable Trust was created in 1984 as a supporting organization.  The bulk of the funding came through the generosity of the Maclellan Foundation and the Helen M. Tipton estate.

Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to Cora Llewellyn and Robert J. Maclellan, Helen remained in Chattanooga most of her life where she attended the Duvall School and Girls Preparatory School.  After graduating from high school, Helen attended finishing school at Gunston Hall School in Washington D.C.

During her life, Helen was active in the civic, social, and religious life of the Chattanooga community.  A member of Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church, she also was actively involved with the Children’s Home, the Junior League, the Lookout Mountain Garden Club, and the Tennessee Antiquities Society.

Widowed in 1960 when her first husband, Walter Hoyle, died, Helen married Chattanooga attorney Jere T. Tipton who oversaw her estate after her death in August of 1968.
